Social Media Tags

The relationship between social media and SEO isn’t at all a clear cut… but it does exist, and it can help you rank #1 if you understand it.

According to Google, social media is NOT a direct SEO ranking factor. But there’s plenty of evidence that social signals such as likes and shares ARE related to your ranking. All of this sharing adds up to more visibility for your content.

Social Media tag can play a huge role in the ranking of your website

Key Takeaway

  • Social media profiles rank high in the results in search listings for brand names
  • Social channels are also search engines themselves
People tend to search in Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media platforms for information
  • Bing already uses social signals

“Social media plays a role in today’s effort to rank well in search results… [t]hese positive signals can have an impact on how you rank organically in the long run.”

  •  It is all about sharing content
If lots of people share your content on social media, then it’s likely more people will link to it, and links ARE a hugely important ranking factor for SEO.

Key Points on how to add Social Media tags

Facebook and Twitter use the open graph protocol. There is a whole list of items you can add but there are four that are actually required . When a link is shared, Facebook and Twitter spider the page for specific tags to display the information. They both have there own metatags.

Facebook og:title The title, name or headline
Twitter twitter:title A brief but comprehensive title of max. 70 characters
Facebook og:description A short description of min. 2 max. 4 sentences
Twitter twitter:description A brief description of the tweet max. 200 characters. Do not re-use the title as the description
Facebook og:image The URL of the image, at least 600x315 pixels, preferable 1200x630 pixels
Twitter twitter:image Add a unique not a generic image representing the content at least 280x150 pixels
Facebook og:url The canonical URL for your page without session variables, user id parameters or counters
Twitter twitter:card summery_large_image
  • Both Facebook and Twitter have an analytics tool. Facebook requires you to provide the unique ID and Twitter calls it their Twitter Card tool
  • You can use the Sharing Debugger to see the information that is used when your website content is shared on Facebook, Messenger and other places.
Social Media Meta Tags (Open Graph and Twitter Cards) Open Graph Tags: Open Graph Meta tags are designed to promote integration between Facebook, LinkedIn, Google and the website URLs that you shared on these platforms. Here is a sample of how Open Graph tags look like in standard HTML: <meta property=”og:type” content=”article” /> <meta property=”og:title” content=”TITLE OF YOUR POST OR PAGE” /> <meta property=”og:description” content=”DESCRIPTION OF PAGE CONTENT” /> <meta property=”og:image” content=”LINK TO THE IMAGE FILE” /> <meta property=”og:url” content=”PERMALINK” /> <meta property=”og:site_name” content=”SITE NAME” /> Twitter Cards: Twitter cards work in a similar way to Open Graph, except you add these special Meta tags only for Twitter. Twitter will use these tags to enhance the display of your page when shared on their platform. Here is a sample of how a Twitter card looks like in standard HTML: <meta name=”twitter:title” content=”TITLE OF POST OR PAGE”> <meta name=”twitter:description” content=”DESCRIPTION OF PAGE CONTENT”> <meta name=”twitter:image” content=”LINK TO IMAGE”> <meta name=”twitter:site” content=”@USERNAME”> <meta name=”twitter:creator” content=”@USERNAME”>

HTML Code Social Media Example

Yoast provides users the possibility to add social media metatags. You can add a title, description and image tag for Facebook and Twitter.

To link social media accounts to WordPress, you need the Jetpack plugin, which is typically installed by default in managed WordPress sites hosted by providers such as GoDaddy. But it can also be installed manually. Search for it in WordPress plugins or find it on the WordPress website.

With Jetpack installed, you can link your social media accounts—Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tumblr, and more—to your blog to ensure every post is automatically promoted on those sites with backlinks.
